Quick Guide to a weekend trip to Oklahoma City
“I had never been to Oklahoma City before. I had no clue. I just heard there were a lot of tornadoes.” – Chris Paul
I thought that quote was funny because I thought the same as Chris Paul did. When I was younger, I watched the movie “Twister” a lot, so in my mind Oklahoma City= Tornado. Of course, there are tornados in Oklahoma, but I wasn’t expecting to see one when I took my trip. Speaking of my trip, let’s get into how this last-minute decision turned into a great time.
What was supposed to be a weekend in Pensacola ended up being a weekend in OKC.
On a Friday morning, my friends and I were sitting in the living room getting ready to go to Pensacola. Until one of them got a notification saying our dolphin ride got canceled because of a tropical storm. We all stood around looking at each other like, “what tropical storm?” After researching, a tropical storm was coming toward Pensacola and other beaches nearby.
We had to cancel our hotels and come up with a new place to go. After about a good few minutes of thinking, Oklahoma City came into mind. I had never been there, so I was excited about going. Well, after a long 7-hour drive, we made it to good ole Oklahoma City.
Now let us get into what we did that weekend and what you could do if you take a weekend trip to Oklahoma City.
1. Visit the Scissortail Park
We visited this park, and it was beautiful. If you like flowers, ponds, and live music, you will enjoy yourself. While there, we listened to the live music, and it was a modest amount of people tuning in.
However, I forgot who the artist was that was performing, so that kind of sucks. There were several food trucks present, and we went over to the rolled ice cream truck. There was also a section for kids to play in this miniature waterpark and an area to roller skate. My favorite part was the many photo opportunities present and, of course, ice cream.
2. Riversport Water Park
This location led us to the decision to go to OKC. It was pretty much the closest to a beach that we were going to get. There are different water activities to engage in at this location, such as ziplining across the river, kayaking, surfing, and white water rafting. It is a fun place to go if you are adventurous. However, from my experience, I see I am not the most adventurous. During the white water rafting, I screamed the entire time. The white water rafting wasn’t on an actual stream, but it was an artificial course. Should I have been screaming like that on an artificial stream? No. Will I scream again if I get on it? You know it! I knew the next body of water I was getting into was the shower.
3. Take a brisk walk through Bricktown
Scrolling through Bricktown was a last-minute decision that I’m glad we made. There were plenty of places to eat, even by the canal. There were different places to take pictures with friends or solo, whichever one you chose. There is also a Ferris wheel, mini-golf course, boutiques, and more. You definitely will need your walking shoes (I had on flats). If you do not want to walk, you can rent out the scooters. I can’t even ride a bike so riding a scooter was out of the question. We went to Bricktown Brewery to get a quick bite to eat. The food was good, and the atmosphere was relaxing. We also went to Fuzzy’s Taco Shop, but that was earlier in the day.
4. Go shopping
They have plenty of boutiques and a few malls to do some shopping. We went to the Penn Square Mall, and there were many selections in different stores. However, some of the stores were closed since we went later in the day.
5. Visit Altitude 1291
This place was so much fun. With a bowling alley, pool tables, and even laser tag, there is plenty to do. Of course, with my inner gamer, I enjoyed their arcade section the most. They also have a restaurant inside, but I didn’t get to eat there. I almost forgot to mention they have a rope course above the arcade that looks tons of fun. Altitude 1291 is an excellent place to stop if you are in the city for some quick fun.
There are more things to do in OKC like indoor skydiving and museums. You can only do so much during a weekend in OKC, especially if you are seven hours away. I encourage anyone to go to OKC for a visit. I am going back whenever I can spend a long time there.
Question
If you live in OKC or visit there, What are some activities that you have done? What restaurants would you suggest a first-time to visit?
