7 Fall and Winter Traditions to Try this Year
“Traditions is not the worship of ashes, but the preservation of fire.”
–Gustav Mahler
Think about the traditions that you or your family have. Do you still practice them? How long has this tradition been practiced? Who started this family tradition?
For my family, we have a tradition of having bar b que for Christmas. It got to the point that if we have anything other than Bar-b-que, it takes a little feeling of Christmas away.
I must ask, have you considered having your own traditions? Typically, traditions are more so for families, but I think having traditions in your singleness and with your significant other is important. Having these traditions will give you something to look forward to when the fall and winter season comes.
So I came up with an idea. I will list seven different traditions and tell you how each idea can be used in:
- Singleness
- Relationship/Kidless Marriage
- Family with Kids
Who knows your new tradition can be the start of a century-long practice.
1. Pumpkin Craving
Going to a pumpkin patch and picking out a pumpkin to take home is a fun tradition that is done during the fall season. Why don’t we add a little bit of spice to it?
- Single– Pick out a pumpkin, crave it out, and place fairy lights inside it to create a unique glowing pumpkin. If you have a table, place the pumpkin as a decoration for your table!
- Couple– Go to the pumpkin patch and pick out a pumpkin. As you two are craving it, every 20 minutes, trade pumpkins until both pumpkins are done. It will be a cool experience to see what your partner would add to your pumpkin.
- Family– Everyone will have their own pumpkins to decorate. If the kids are young, they can paint the pumpkins but crave it if they are old enough. After it is decorated, place it outside by the front door so the kids can always see their creations when they come home from school.
2. Fall Theme Picnic
Summer is a popular season for picnics, but that doesn’t mean you can’t have one during fall. Here is some Fall desserts that you can bake for your picnic!
- Single– Create your spread and bring a journal with you. I came up with some journal prompts that you can use that can help you become the best version of yourself!
- Couple– Take some Easels, and fall color paints, and paint something fall-related together. While painting, you two can ask each other some relationship-based questions.
- Family– After eating, a fall scavenger hunt would be a perfect game. You have to find items such as a brown leaf or an acorn. Whoever finds the most items wins!
3. Fall Decorations
What’s fall without a little decoration to prepare for the season?
- Single– Go to your nearest Target or Walmart, stock up on fall-scented candles, and buy a new fluffy blanket to kick off the season.
- Couple– Buy three fall items that remind you of each other and explain to one another why this item reminds you of them. This can be really thoughtful or hilarious, depending on the item.
- Family– Make some fall-themed arts and crafts and place them on top of a fireplace, a table, or the fridge if it’s a picture.
4. Fun Photoshoot
Doing a simple, cute photoshoot is always a good go-to, but why not make it a little interesting? Pick one of the Holidays or seasons and make a fun photoshoot out of it. Here is a list of ideas:
- Santa and Elves
- Halloween photo shoot in the woods with Scream or Micheal Myers mask
- Everyone is a Turkey
- Wear a Pumpkin Head
- Dress as Ghost
5. Christmas Day Routine
- Single– At the end of the day, go around your neighbor and admire the Christmas lights that your neighbors put on their houses. If you do not have any neighbors that have them, go to a neighborhood that does!
- Couple– Hallmark Movie Marathon and Christmas Desserts! Rather, homemade or store-bought will do just fine. This can be done after seeing each other family and after gift-giving.
- Family– Make a decent-sized Gingerbread house (after opening gifts), and you all work together to put together the Ultimate Gingerbread House!
6. Thankful Thanksgiving
Instead of showing thankfulness on the day of Thanksgiving, why not show it throughout the entire month?
- Single– For each day leading up to Thanksgiving, Write down one thing you are thankful for a month. If you list someone, either reach out to them and tell them how much you appreciate them or take them out if they live near you.
- Couple– Write down everything that you are thankful for when it comes to your significant other. However, do not tell them until Thanksgiving. You can make a Mason Jar with popsicle sticks or a box with all pictures and cut out of fall I
- Family- Before having Thanksgiving Dinner, Each person will go around and tell each other what they love about each other or what something they are thankful that the other person has done.
7. New Year’s Eve
New Year’s Eve Party. Watching the Ball Drop. Going to church on New Year’s Eve night. All are normal traditions that people have for NYE. However, we should try something a little different.
- Single– Make a creative board of magazine cutouts or stickers with your New Year’s resolution. If you do not do New Year’s Resolutions, you can visit your favorite restaurant or coffee shop and Journal about the biggest lessons you learned this year.
- Couple– Cook each other a nice dinner or have a homemade charcuterie board and discuss the good and the bad about the Year. Also, discuss your goals next year so y’all can keep each other accountable.
- Family– A Bonfire! Whether outdoor or indoor (indoor electrics smores makers fit perfectly on your table), set up the graham crackers, marshmallows, and chocolates! You can talk about the year while sitting around and playing card games with each other.
